Washi screens - Collaboration with Garnier et Linker - 2021- Rhode Island, USA & Paris, France
Folding screens made of cherry and walnut wood. Each panel holds handmade kozo and mitsumata paper with natural/kakishibu dye finish.
During pandemic lockdowns, a long-distance exchange of ideas and experiments commenced with Garnier et Linker. With a shared interest in raw materials, traditional techniques and subtle textures, two variations of papers were selected for the final screens. One captures a gradation from smooth to rough fibers, resulting from alterations in the processing of raw mitsumata fiber. The second involves dyeing and layering thin hand-poured sheets of kozo together to build up depth. The distinct auburn color is derived from traditional kakishibu (fermented persimmon) dye from Japan.
