包む

to wrap

This performance piece involves interacting with a large sheet of handmade paper. Drawing from the Japanese tradition of using furoshiki (wrapping cloths) to contain items for carrying, this performance highlights the act of wrapping and unwrapping. With an expanded scale, the process requires the involvement of the whole body. What might we be carrying, wrapping, or letting go within ourselves?

The handmade sheet was pieced together using with mitsumata, kozo, and abaca fibers. Multiple layers of protective konnyaku starch and kakishibu (persimmon tannin juice) were brushed on, resulting in the amber color that continues to deepen with oxidation. After massaging, it has become leather-like and resilient.
