Ripples - Singapore - 2024

calligraphy paper, thread, dye, branch

Ripples seeks to make tangible the art of swimming, which sustained the artist while undergoing art therapy training, part of which included clinical placement in a hospice setting. Repetitive stitches weave through the paper, drawing links to how one takes a breath by breaking the surface of the water. The absence of knots suggest impermanence and invitation to let go.

Prior to sewing, the paper base was strengthened through the momigami technique, which involves applying konnyaku starch and kneading fibrous paper. Natural tears and holes were formed in the process, leading to areas of concentrated care. The wearing down and repairing of the material captures struggles and growth while journeying with individuals in palliative care. However fleeting, each encounter left meaningful ripples.
